How to get an email app password

Amazon and Target email you a verification code when we sign in to your account. An app password lets us read that code from your inbox, so your checkout doesn’t stall waiting for you.

Before you start

  • Make it for the email address on your Amazon or Target account, the one the retailer sends codes to.
  • It comes from your email provider (Google, Apple, Yahoo, Microsoft), not from Amazon or Target.
  • It is not your normal email password. Never enter that.
  • You can delete it from the same page at any time, which stops it working immediately.

Gmail

Needs 2-Step Verification turned on for the Google account.

  1. Step 1: Sign in to the Google account that your Amazon or Target account uses, and go to 2-Step Verification. If it’s off, turn it on and follow the prompts.
  2. Step 2: Open myaccount.google.com/apppasswords. Sign in again if asked.
  3. Step 3: Under App name, type PhoenixVault and click Create.
  4. Step 4: Google shows a 16-letter password in a yellow box (like abcd efgh ijkl mnop). Copy it. You won’t be able to see it again.
  5. Step 5: Paste it into the App Password (IMAP) field on your entry. Spaces are fine.
  • “The setting you are looking for is not available” means 2-Step Verification is off, or a work or school admin has blocked app passwords. Use a personal Gmail account.
  • Changing your Google password deletes every app password. Make a new one afterwards and update your entries.

iCloud (@icloud.com, @me.com)

Needs two-factor authentication, which most Apple Accounts already have.

  1. Step 1: Go to account.apple.com and sign in.
  2. Step 2: Open Sign-In and Security, then App-Specific Passwords.
  3. Step 3: Click Generate an app-specific password (or the + button).
  4. Step 4: Name it PhoenixVault, click Create, and enter your Apple Account password if asked.
  5. Step 5: Copy the password it shows (like abcd-efgh-ijkl-mnop) and paste it into the App Password (IMAP) field on your entry.
  • Changing your Apple Account password deletes app-specific passwords. Make a new one afterwards.

Yahoo Mail

  1. Step 1: Go to Yahoo Account Security and sign in.
  2. Step 2: Scroll to App passwords (or Generate and manage app passwords) and open it.
  3. Step 3: Type PhoenixVault as the app name and click Generate password.
  4. Step 4: Copy the 16-letter password and paste it into the App Password (IMAP) field on your entry.

Outlook, Hotmail, Live

Microsoft is phasing out app passwords for mail apps on personal accounts, so this may not work. If it doesn’t, the most reliable fix is a retailer account that uses a Gmail or iCloud address.

  1. Step 1: Go to account.microsoft.com/security and sign in.
  2. Step 2: Open Advanced security options and turn on Two-step verification if it’s off.
  3. Step 3: Under App passwords, click Create a new app password.
  4. Step 4: Copy the password it shows and paste it into the App Password (IMAP) field on your entry.
